Abstract : This paper examines how virtual reality (VR) technologies are transforming storytelling conventions in contemporary English fiction. Drawing on founda-tional narratology (Ryan 2001; Murray 1997) and pres-ence theory (Slater & Sanchez‑Vives 2016), it explores emergent “storyliving” paradigms through a qualitative comparative analysis of five VR‑enabled works selected for their published extensions or prototypes (Bucher 2017; Fisher 2024; Vilhjálmsson et al. 2023). The study employs thematic coding to assess immersion, interac-tivity, and emotional engagement, cross‑referencing narrative functions with VR affordances. Key findings reveal that branching narratives, embodied point‑of‑view, and multimodal layering enhance user agency and deepen emotional resonance. Case studies illustrate practical design principles—from minimal diegetic interfaces in literary VR prototypes to game‑inspired quest mechanics and child‑centric interactive tales—while cautioning against cognitive overload in nonfiction formats (Barreda‑Ángeles et al. 2021). Discussion addresses hybrid print + VR formats, transmedia opportunities, and technological or cultural constraints such as cost barriers and learning curves.
